This is definitely a painting that evolved. I started out with the idea of a cake tree - I imagined a rather surreal image - lots of bunches of leaves each with a cake on top. But when I got to the stage of finishing the leaves they looked so good I didn't want to add anything else. I really love the way the leaves are held up away from the main branches by lots of smaller twigs making them almost alive.
The title comes last and the original one, Cake Tree, bore no relevance at all. What I did realise was that the actual tree looks very like a bonsai grown in a shallow tray so I suppose this should really be named large, outside bonsai, not in a tray ... but that is too long.
